THE BIOGRAPHY OF MAN

Psa 39:5

Morning Meditation

Psalms 39:5, "Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah."

I want to speak on the biography of man as it is told in the Scriptures. We might call this a cameo which is a brief, vivid portrayal or depiction. Let's look first at-

THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY

Psalms 139:13-16, "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."

Verse 13 says, "For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb" The word "possessed" means "owner," in other words, "You made me and therefore own me." The word "reins" is "Kidneys" and is used like the word "heart" and "bowels" is used to describe man's innermost being. The word "covered" translates the Hebrew "sakak" and means, "shut me up," in my mothers womb. Man's beginning is at conception and God is involved in conception.

"My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth." The word "substance" translates "'otsem" and means, "'bones or strength." God was procreating from the first. John 1:3, "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."

The words "was not hid from thee" refers to what is seen by God as the bones begin to form. God can see before man can. The words "was made" is a passive voice verb, "asah," and means to make out of existing material. The passive voice verb means that the subject is the recipient of the action. Adam did not come into being by evolution. He came into existence by procreation.

The words "curiously wrought" is a word from which we get our word "embroidered." This means that God is in the womb forming the body and personality.

Psalms 139:16, "Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."

The word "substance" is embryo or fetus (golem).  The words "yet being unperfect" means God saw what He was going to do ahead of time and recognized the Psalmist before the structure of his body could be discerned by man."

IF ONE BELIEVES THE BIBLE, THIS STATEMENT PLACES LIFE AT THE POINT OF CONCEPTION.

THE EARLY MANIFESTATION OF HIS CONDITION

Man sinned against God shortly after his creation. When he had  children they were born with a sin nature. Psalms 58:3 says, "The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies."

The word "estranged" supports the Bible doctrine of depravity. We are born sinners: Psalms 51:5, "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me."

We do not only need to repent of what we have done but we need to repent of what we are. We are sinners by nature and sinners by choice.

MAN'S FULL DEVELOPMENT OF HIS DEPRAVED NATURE

What man in his depravity is potentially is found in Romans 1:18:32. Read this. We may have not done all that is listed here but the potential is constantly there.

THE DIVINE ESTIMATE OF MAN'S WORTH

God loves man and has put a value on his worth; John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."  His worth is not valued from the standpoint of his personal abilities; it is valued by God at the cross. If man's worth is valued on the basis of the price God paid for his redemption, then Wall Street just went broke trying to cover the cost. My self esteem may be very low but my worth just sky rocketed because of the cross. Someone hold my mules!!! Hallelujah!!!!

Man's story began with God and will end with God. Romans 11:36, "For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen."

May the Lord bless these words to our hearts.
